The Alabama Senate passes a bill to block undocumented students from attending prom. Supporters call it a "jobs bill." Yeah, what?
It’s actually much worse than it sounds. The bill also requires students to present proof of citizenship to participate in any extracurricular activity. Not all students, of course, just the ones that might be illegal immigrants. White kids won’t be presenting their birth certificates to go to glee club. Much like the Arizona “Papers please” law, this is encouraging schools to harass minority students.
In fact, this is basically a copy of the Arizona law, with extra features to harass kids along with adults. GOP state Sen. Scott Beason, who introduced the bill, referred to it as a “Jobs bill” for some farcical reason. He also calls it “emptying the clip” on immigration reform, because violent rhetoric from the GOP is still considered okay.
